How is a PDF compressed in the browser?
Krymp loads your PDF locally with pdf-lib and optimizes the heavy parts: embedded images are re-encoded to more efficient formats (JPEG/WebP) at a quality level you choose, while text, fonts and vector graphics are preserved pixel-perfect. That means a scanned PDF or a PDF full of product images can shrink from 20 MB to a few MB — without making the text blurry.
The whole job runs on your computer or phone with WebAssembly. The file is never sent to a server, so even sensitive documents like contracts, invoices and applications are safe to shrink here.
Which quality level should I choose?
For documents that will be emailed or uploaded to forms, "Balanced" or "Strong compression" is usually enough. If you want to keep maximum image sharpness for print, choose "Mild". Krymp shows both the original size and the new size so you can compare before downloading.
